Golf Club History
Founded in 1890 by a group of 12 enthusiasts, on land on Whitchurch Down owned by the Duke of Bedford, who gave permission to set out a link of holes on the down.
Since then the course and clubhouse have undergone many changes. The course is now in its fourth different layout since the original. The Clubhouse, the third occupied by members their guests and visitors, was originally built and paid for by the Duke of Bedford in 1915. It has been tastefully modernised
over the years yet still retains some of its original features.
The club with well over 1000 members, golfing and social is an integral part of the town and is rightly proud to have been given the charter from Tavistock Town Council to incorporate the Town's coat of arms into its own club badge.
The club is known as one of the best within the South West hosting many County Championships and matches.
In the mid 1980's a link was established with Tavistock Country Club in New Jersey, which has seen several reciprocal visits made by members of both clubs.
